The Much Honoured Louis Barratt, Baron of Irrus

The Barony of Irrus

The Barony of Irrus is an Irish feudal Barony, linked to the Erris area in County Mayo, Ireland, boasting a vast expanse of 230,452 acres characterised by mountainous blanket bog. With extensive sea coasts and some of the oldest geological structures in Ireland, Erris offers a diverse landscape for birdwatchers, water sports enthusiasts, and those exploring walking trails like the Tír Sáile Sculpture Trail.

The title of Baron of Irrus was first recognised by Elizabeth I of Ireland in 1585, and granted by patent by James I in 1605. The current holder of the title is The Much Hon. Louis Allan Barratt, Baron of Irrus.

Irrus being a name derived from the Irish Iorras Domhnann, it references the location of the barony on the west coast of Ireland, with ‘Iorras’ meaning ‘western promontory’. Over time Iorras was anglicised to Irrus and further in the modern day to Erris.
